First action of speedweeks is behind us, as the Budweiser Shootout and Daytona 500 Pole Qualifying took place this past weekend. I always say that the Rolex 24 is the unofficial start of the motorsports season, but NASCAR is officially back.

I will get to Kurt later on here but first i have to comment on De-Evolution of Plate Racing, AKA the Return to the Big Pack.

In Short: It sucks.

I usually give the history lesson here, Daytona and Talladega repaved, COT bumpers that line up perfectly, evolved into the push draft that allowed drivers to pass with help, and get the hell away from each other. NASCAR Nation, lead by their icon Dale Jr spoke out against this style of restrictor plate racing and longed for the days of the massive 30 car pack around the high banks of Daytona and Talladega.

NASCAR heard the cries of its fickle fanbase, and worked during the offseason thunder test to return to “the traditional style of racing at Daytona and Talladega.” My point might be, the “traditional style” of racing there might have been more like not having a plate at all, but what do I know.

So all eyes were on the World’s center of racing this past Saturday Night for the first race of the season. No points on the line. Running for a trophy. Oh and did I mention, Defending Champion, Kurt Busch.

What did we get for our troubles? A ridiculous, 75 lap demolition derby with an exciting finish. Less cars were torn up in that afternoons ARCA race. I can’t stress it enough folks. The “Return to the Pack” that the traditionalists were screaming about, lead to so much carnage, I think the teams had to call in grief councilors for their fabricators. It was a mess, and it didn’t take long. It started with a lap 9 melee, which was only a preview of things to come, when the 24 went flipping later in the second segment. Caught up in that accident was of COURSE Kurt Busch, who was already on his 2nd car of speedweeks after being taken out in practice. (more on Kurt and his backup car later)

As easy as it is to point fingers about what driver screwed up what, it doesn’t matter. Every simple mistake becomes magnified in the Pack. When Kurt and Regan Smith wrecked at Talladega last fall, they were the only ones who bore the brunt of it. When Tony touched off a melee in practice on Friday, plenty of drivers went to backup cars.

Now you might say, But Drew! That was in a non points race! They are going to be more careful in the 500! I agree. This will lead to a middle part of the race that is not so exciting, as guys will line up as to not destroy their shot at the 500 early in the event. Sounds like a fun, No passing kind of Sunday.

Another point. Before Kurt was taken out of the race he was threatinging to defend his Bud Shootout crown running as high as 4th in the closing stages. He was doing a pretty good job, as a guy would get shuffled out of line, he would fill the spot, and pick up a position. Not bad Kurt.

However, in the two car deal, if he wanted to go get somebody, all he needed was his trusty drafting partner Regan Smith to shove him around the racetrack and into the lead. Yes, he was dependent on someone else helping him. But he was NOT helpless!

So that leads to the final argument on the 2 car draft. “Well Drew, I hate the two car draft, because the guy who is pushing is just content to finish second!”

Let me ask you something. When Kyle Busch came off turn 4 last Saturday, setting up Tony Stewart for the winning move, in a destroyed race car, did YOU see someone who was content to just finish second?

The two car draft PROVIDED the exciting finish. The pack just destroyed a bunch of race cars.

Anyway on to Kurt Busch, on track for the first time in his 51 Phoenix entry. First of all, I really liked that Tag Heuer color scheme he ran this weekend. The first one was destroyed in the practice crash on Friday, and they had to go to the backup. This is where running for the smaller time team becomes an issue. Their backup was an intermediate track car, with not even a SEAT in it. The 51 team must have worked their tails off to get that thing ready to race. The bad news is the backup got destroyed too. I dont know how much this James Finch team can absorb hits like this. The good news is Kurt did a great job in his backup running as i said as high as 3rd with a real chance to win the race. This is encouraging.

I was not able to follow much of Pole Practice on Saturday. Didn’t seem like Kurt was too high on the charts, and it showed in Sundays Qualifying. Kurt’s qualifying lap was not so hot, but the draft, as much as i hate the huge pack, is the great equalizer. I expect him to have a good qualifying race on Thursday, provided he gets caught up in no one else’s shenanigans.

Still unknown is what will happen when Kurt offloads at the first downforce track of the year. I am looking forward to it and kinda worried about it at the same time. Kurt showed speed during preseason testing, so I wonder what changed in his single car package between now and then. The Fords will be tough to beat I’m afraid. A Lot of the chevys were pushing water even during the qualifying runs. The Fords did not seem to have that problem. But we will see. I also believe he is entered in the nwide race in the 51. Perhaps between him and his semi-teammate brother they can do something about Tony’s ridiculous domination over that event. Looking forward to the duels tomorrow!

Hi Folks

First of all thanks to the folks at KBN for setting up the new blog aera here. We are in the home stretch of the off-season with Daytona coming before we know it.

So here is what we know. Kurt Busch has a full time cup series ride with James Finch in the 51 car. As a fan, I am lukewarm on this paring at best. First of all, Kurt has to do what Kurt has to do for his career I understand that and I even understand what may have lead him to the Pheonix Racing team. If the Preseason Daytona test proved anything to us, it is that Kurt will be strong on the plate tracks. I am looking for what will happen when we get to a downforce track. I feel this will be an unpredictable season for Kurt in the cup series. I realize the highly touted fact that these are Hendrick chassis and engines, but lets not kid ourselves into thinking that Kurt just got himself into a carbon copy of the 48 car.

However the big news for me was dropped this past Thursday. It was rumored that Kurt would drive for his brothers team in the nationwide series. This was cut down as Kurt announced that he would also be driving a James Finch entry in the 2nd tier series as well.

Thursday rolled around and the big Kyle Busch Motorsports announcement was coming. They had a supercross exhibition, and then the teams official feed tweeted a shot of a stage decorated by Monster Energy drink logos. “Aha,” I thought, “Ricky Charmichael to KBM. That’s cool.” Little did I know……

Soon enough a pair of #54 Monster Energy Drink Toyotas were debuted, with a Busch bother behind the wheel of each one. Kurt and Kyle announced their intention to compete for the Nationwide Series owners title in the #54 car fielded by Kyle Busch Motorsports. Even more interesting, Kurt to take better than half of the races in that 54 car. How are they going to decide who runs Bristol?

I was much more excited over this announcement than the Finch deal. Why? I perceive that Kyle’s equipment will be extremely competitive in the Nationwide Series. With this, I can stand and say I am predicting that Kurt Busch will go to victory lanes quite a few times this year in that #54 car. I would even be all in if Kurt turned out to run for the NNS title instead of cup. Why? Because my feeling is this car WILL be competitive. We all know Kurt’s record in the handful of Nationwide series starts that he has. I just want to see him up front, it does not matter in what series to me.

So as of now, I am more exited over this Nationwide deal than I am the Cup deal. Feel free to disagree, but if I was a betting man I would put my chips in the Nationwide pot right now. I may be proved wrong. I may be not. Time will tell. Don’t get me wrong I will be rooting for Kurt every Sunday just like the last several years. But I really bought into this NNS deal as a fan and I am excited to see where it goes.

So the cup series indeed did their testing deal at Daytona. NASCAR is hell bent on breaking up the two-car-love-bug-grab-your-partner-and-dosie-do-tandem racing seen in recent restrictor plate races. A little bit of everything was on display during the 3 day test. the watching-paint-dry single car runs, the much maligned two car deal, and the crazy packs on the high banks. I tweeted a snide comment along the lines of “I hope you are all glad the pack is back, dont complain when your guy is taken out in a 30 car pileup he had nothing to do with”

Sure enough there were little incidents in the pack including one during the Saturday test involving Juan Montoya, Dale Jr and Jeff Burton. Since Montyona was involved it was universally blamed on him, but I did not see it that way. But the lesson is learned, when one guy messes up in the pack it WILL ruin a lot of peoples day.

Kurt Busch showed some strength during the testing at or near the top of the leaderboard and getting out of dodge (no pun intended) early by skipping the final pack session. Cant say I blame him, but this testing is not only necessary for the teams but for NASCAR to figure out whatever the hell they are going to do with the rules package for speedweeks. Also an item on everyone’s mind the new Electronic Fuel Injection bringing NASCAR into the modern era…..well….maybe modern as the 80s. Gone are the ancient carburetor and distributor.  No noticeable changes from the fans end that I could tell during Speedweeks.

Something that continues to bother me is NASCARS aforementioned hell bent mission to end the 2 car draft. I believe the sanctioning body should keep their nose out of what evolves on the race track. The draft had to come from somewhere right? It wasn’t always the big pack? The two car deal is just the evolution of it, the re-invention of the proverbial wheel. There should not be an expection on the part of the fan base, that the sanctioning body will provide a product in a perceived format. If that was the case, it would be illegal to pass Dale Jr after the white flag. The caveat to this of course is that you may not always be crazy about what happens during said race. Tough. Not every football game comes down to the star quarterback with the ball in his hand and 30 seconds to go, 4 points down (speaking of which, GO GIANTS). Sometimes you get a game thats over by halftime. These things happen.

Ford Motor Company introduced their 2013 Cup series car to much media fanfare. Seems that NASCAR is sacking the common template in favor of allowing the manufacturer to put a body style on the track that is close if not exactly what rolls off the showroom floor. I am indifferent to this philosophy, I don’t see anything really WRONG with the current COT model, we KNOW these are purpose built race cars. Its not 1960 anymore. I give FORD credit for the copy of their 2013 FUSION that was unveiled. They made a dead on exact copy of a BUTT ugly street car. Way to go Ford.

I thought about doing a season preview deal for Kurt’s 2012 campaign, but I am going to be honest with you. I have no idea how this thing is going to go. As I stated before I foresee a ton of success in the Nationwide series in that Monster car. I will let time tell on the cup site of things. A strong Speedweeks is not out of the question. I agree with some talking head predictions, there is no reason why Kurt Busch couldn’t go out there and win the Daytona 500. The up and down media coverage on this is starting to annoy me, as if that is anything new. I believe there is a perception that Kurt and Kyle will not get along in this 54 car deal, which I think is bunk. Blood is thicker than EVERYTHING, and I’m happy to see the two of them team up.

I hope Kurt continues his race weekend autograph sessions. There is nothing better than seeing YOUR DRIVER on race morning before they compete. Tell me another sport where that takes place at the highest level, you cant. Also I saw a tweet from Kyle that #54 diecast is expected in the summer. I am looking forward to that.

In closing here I would be remiss to not cover the passing of Dr. Mattioli, founder of Pocono Raceway. I still consider Pocono to be my ‘home’ track if I had such a thing. I saw my first race there, and was lucky enough to see Rusty Wallace go to victory lane that day. Dr. Mattioli announced his retirement during this past August race weekend. I do not know if he was in bad shape then, I hope he got to enjoy what retirement he had. Pocono Raceway still has the greatest fan access that I have manged to experience, with pit road access for $50 good for the entire race weekend. It is things like that that are missing at other race tracks. Thank you Doc.
